49ers Dominate 2010 Finalists

by Eric Tellez 1/8/2010

When the finalists for the 2010 Hall of Fame class were announced today 5 of the 17 nominees own 49er Super Bowl rings. Roger Craig, Richard Dent, Charles Haley, Ricky Jackson, and Jerry Rice all made the list with Rice being the closest thing to a sure bet as possible.

Roger Craig was a 49er from 1983-to-1990 and was the first player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season (1985). In Craig's 8 seasons with the team the 49ers never missed the playoffs and won 3 Super Bowls. Craig scored 3 touchdowns in Super Bowl XIX and should have been game MVP. Craig is a borderline Hall of Famer.

Richard Dent came to the 49ers in 1994 after a legendary career in Chicago. San Francisco was hoping Dent could provide veteran leadership on the defensive line, and help neutralize Dallas fullback Daryl Johnston, but only got two games out of Dent before he sat out the season with injuries. Dent was MVP of Super Bowl XX. Most consider Dent to be a product of Buddy Ryan's system keeping him out another year.

Charles Haley was drafted by the 49ers out of tiny James Madison in 1986. Haley had his best year in 1990 leading the NFL with 16 sacks and being named NFC Defensive Player of the Year. Haley retired with 100.5 career sacks and remains the only player with 5 Super Bowl rings. If he doesn't get in, consider it "personal" between Haley and the media.

Ricky Jackson started two seasons for the 49ers at right defensive end even though he had been a linebacker his entire career in New Orleans. Jackson recorded 128 sacks in 15-years with 7 selections to the Pro Bowl. Not a sure thing but there are less deserving players that have been inducted.

Jerry Rice is going to Canton no questions asked. The biggest concern I have as a fan is will Jerry get a unanimous selection? There is likely going to be a couple of party crashers that don't vote for Rice because they have no other reason to do it other than they can. Protecting that 100% margin as if some other player will one day come along more deserving, closer to perfection is ridiculous. If Rice doesn't get a unanimous selection it will be wrong, if Rice doesn't get it and Emmitt Smith does it will be a crime.

  1. Sending any Dallas Cowboy player is a crime in itself.

  2. Well said Mr. Tellez.
