49ers Have 3 Named Pro Bowl Starters

by: Eric Tellez

The San Francisco 49ers will have three players on the starting line-up when the 2010 Pro Bowl is played in Miami on January 31st. Linebacker Patrick Willis, punter Andy Lee, and tight end Vernon Davis were all selected to represent the gold and scarlet for the the NFC.

This is Patrick Willis' third selection for the Pro Bowl in his three-year career. Willis was selected as a reserve his first season and has been named a starter in the last two. The last 49er linbacker selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls was Keena Turner (1984, 1985, and 1986) while the last 49er linebacker to start two consecutive Pro Bowls was Dave Wilcox. Wilcox made the 1st team every year from 1968-to-1973.

Vernon Davis ends a 15-year Pro Bowl drought for San Francisco at tight end making his first appearance and his first start in his four year career. The last 49er tight end to be selected was Brent Jones in 1995. Jones played in four consecutive Pro Bowls (1992-1995) and started in his first four. On a side note, tight end Brian Jennings made the 2004 team but officially was listed a "long snapper" in regards to position.

Punter Andy Lee returns to the Pro Bowl after making the team in 2007. Lee remains the only punter in team history to ever be named to an NFC roster.

Having three players named to the game is an improvement over last year in which only one player (Willis) was named.

The Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl for the first time. It will also the be the first game held away from Hawaii since the game was played in Los Angeles in 1979. The NFC won last year's game with the score of 30-21.

  1. Lets see how the television ratings hold up. I would much rather see the pro bowl afterwards.

  2. Not having the Super Bowl players in is going to hurt the game's appeal. I'd rather watch it after also.

  3. There used to be a game when the College All-Stars would play the championship winner - that would be the game of the year these days!
