Brian Westbrook - An Amazing Addition

by Eric Tellez on 16 Aug 2010

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that they have signed former Philadelphia Eagles' runningback Brian Westbrook to a 1-year deal worth a guaranteed $1.25 million. The front runners for "BWest's" services had been the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Rams before the sudden retirement of HB Glen Coffee sent the 'Niners scrambling for a competent back-up for Frank Gore. I have been a big fan of Brian Westbrook for years, so many years that I have to wonder just how much tread is left on the tires.

Since 2002 Westbrook has been a multipurpose weapon that would of been a perfect fit for the 49ers West Coast Offense of old with his ability to catch the ball and turn the corner on stretch plays. Now, after 8-years of being abused in the NFC East Westbrook has found a perfect situation to begin winding down his career as a 3rd down back on an up-and-coming team.
But is Westbrook ready to be a part time player?

At the age of 30 Westbrook is still a big time weapon. If not for a series of concussions last season it is not hard to imagine that he could still be the featured back in Philadelphia. And that's were the questions start for me. What's going to happen if he isn't getting the ball enough? What's going to happen if Frank Gore goes down with an injury and we're one hit to the head away from our #3 runningback? Is Westbrook going to politic returning punts and kicks? If he does what's going to happen to Ted Ginn's psyche?

If this were 3-or-4 seasons ago I would be singing the praises of this signing to anyone that would listen. Now, I have too many concerns that can be only be answered by sitting, watching, and waiting for BWest to get the ball in his hands and see what he does with it. The possibility is there for Westbrook to add a new dimension to the offense and I hope that the Westbrook that takes the field is the same one that I've grown accustomed to watching to every Sunday.

Something is telling me that bringing Brian Westbrook into the mix is going to be amazing. I just don't know if it's going to be an amazing success, or an amazing failure.

  1. It is hard to know what the Eagles are thinking on some of their roster moves, I would feel sorry for them but the are in the NFC so their loss I guess.
