Super Bowl Replaces Christmas

by Eric Tellez for NFLMIX.COM

It was 5:30 am Friday when the phone rang, it was my Dad's cellphone number on the screen. I closed my eyes, said a silent prayer that nothing bad had happened, and hit the green phone on the keypad. "I'm making a list for the Super Bowl, you planning on bringing anything?" I rubbed my eyes, thought a second and doing my best at 5:30 in the morning managed to force out "I'll bring some chips". "Great! I've got you down for chips, can't wait till see you Sunday." And that was that.

Just two months prior my life was total chaos and not so cut-and-clear. Like all those that took on Christmas shopping this season I was faced with unending lines, mounting credit card debt, stressful searching and even more stressful not finding. Throw in the gift exchange at work and the cold weather and all I could think of was how much I wanted the holiday season to end. I'd been told this before but for the first time in my life I realized that Santa Claus and presents had replaced Peace on Earth and Goodwill Towards Man. Judging by the faces of the others I wasn't the only one.

Spring ahead to yesterday.

Malls and shopping centers flooded with people in their Steeler and Packer gear smiling at each other when meeting an ally and uncomfortably smirking at their enemies when crossing paths with their shopping carts. "Poor guy (or girl), he's going to be in for a surprise on Sunday" they all thought. Standing in line holding my chips I heard the cell phones going off like crazy; "what time you coming over," "I'll save you seat", "you better not wear that stupid hat" and "don't forget the beer!" Different phrases that all meant "I hope to see you." Because that's what the Super Bowl has become, a celebration of a what we love with the people we love. That's what Christmas used to be about, and hopefully can someday be again.

This morning, as I put on my 49ers sweatshirt, I thought to myself that in a few months we kickoff again and the opportunity to chase the ring starts again for everyone, and maybe next year will be our year. But before I can get too far into dreaming about next season the phone rings again. "Ya dad, I'm on my way, can't wait to see you either."
