We beat the Seahawks. No big deal." "Alex Smith still needs to go". "Jim Harbaugh got lucky the special teams bailed him out." Did I miss something?

I remember Week One of last season, sitting down comfortably in my chair with my nachos and my Big Red soda, putting on the game, and waiting for the season to start so we called begin our march towards the playoffs. And what happened? We lost. We lost bad.

Then we lost again. And again. And the losing continued to happen until the very end when a very weak St. Louis Rams team knocked us out of playoff contention and eventually sent the Seahawks to the playoffs with a 7-9 record. The Week One loss changed the season for the 49ers, it was something that they never recovered from. It's something that I knew could be righted with a Week 1 victory in 2011. And we got it! But where's the happiness?

Jim Harbaugh is undefeated, yes it's only been 1-game but it's better than win less, Ted Ginn is showing that he can be a factor after a lot of people had written him off, Seattle is down a game to us in the division. Things might not be looking great, but they are looking UP and sometimes that's just as important for a team that has struggled for so long.

I'm not making bold predictions. I'm not going to say we're going to the Super Bowl or even going to playoffs. What am I saying is that it's time to change the attitude, it's time to change the good win vs bad win mentally, it's time to remember that when moving ahead it's not the size of the step, but the direction.

Eric Tellez is an independent football journalist from Las Cruces, NM. Talent wise, the 49ers may believe that they have what it takes to compete with anyone in the league but when you look deeper it's not a very pretty picture. Take away LB Patrick Willis and TE Vernon Davis and who on this team scares you? Which player would you want to have if you were starting a franchise from the ground up?

The 10-picks we have in this year's draft are the most we have had since we drafted 9-players in 2007 and we need get at least TWO players that can contribute immediately for this draft to be a success.

Here's how I see the drafting taking shape at the time of the writing:

QB - Yes, we need one and something tells me it's going to be......Alex Smith. Sure, Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert would be great but he's going to be an Arizona Cardinal, according to everyone they are madly in love with the guy. There could be consideration for Florida State's Christian Ponder or maybe Washington's Jake Locker but the 49ers are rebuilding and they are going to focus on other positions this year.

Round 1: CB Patrick Peterson from LSU. Some draft reports have him the #1 overall pick in the entire draft. CB's Nate Clements isn't what he used to be. What he used to be isn't even what he used to be. Shantae Spencer is solid but not spectacular.

Round 2: LB Justin Houston from Georgia. When I think back in time I can't remember the 49ers having a fantastic pass-rushing linebacker since the days of Charles Haley. Houston could be that guy. He also has some experience on the defensive line and that could come in handy as well.

Round 3: S Chris Conte from California. It's hard to admit that the 49ers need to consider drafting a safety just one year after taking one in the 2nd round but I don't think the team has a choice.

Round 4: QB Pat Devlin from Delaware. Am i dreaming with this pick? Absolutely. Devlin will be long gone by the time the 49ers get to this pick but it sure is nice to dream. I'd be feeling great if we could get a quarterback in the 4th round though, maybe Greg McElroy from Alabama.

Round 4: RB Taiwan Jones from Eastern Washington. A small-school change of pace back, Jones can not only turn the corner, he can also catch the ball and get hard yardage. A great compliment for RB Frank Gore.

Round 5: WR Jeremy Kerley from TCU. This pick might drive some of my readers crazy and I can understand why. On the surface this guy looks like another Ted Ginn, Jr. but I love his ability to blow a game-up. I'm getting tired of being envious of Eagles and Bears fans that have a guy that can change a game in a split second.

Round 6: LB Owen Marecic from Stanford. Has a history with coach Jim Harbaugh and can double as a fullback when needed to. Some will say I'm sentimental for wanting to see a Harbaugh/Marecic reunion but the truth is, Marecic is a FOOTBALL PLAYER and that's what we need. A guy that loves to play and if we don't appreciate his value chances are a team like the Patriots will.

Round 6: C Zane Taylor from Utah. Last year we took a guard and a tackle. This year we add to the line and bring in the center.

Round 7: DT Adrian Taylor from Oklahoma. The defensive line needs a little bit of help but has some time before it becomes a main focus of concern. This would be a good time to take a chance and see if Taylor can cash in on his flashes of greatness.

Round 7: TE Kyle Adams from Purdue. I know we have Vernon Davis. I know we drafted Nate Byham last year. But the last pick tends to be a pick that you just want to take a chance on and I believe Kyle Adams could make Byham real uncomfortable.

Eric Tellez is a team writer from Las Cruces, NM. The answer would be yes. Do I think Alex Smith can be a good quarterback in the NFL? The answer would again be yes. Do I want Alex Smith quarterbacking my team? That would be a no. But it's not because I don't think he can do the job.

Like all relationships the strength is in the details. A person not intimately familiar with the inner workings doesn't really know what's going on but it seems like this is the perfect opportunity for this team to cut ties while not totally tainting Alex Smith's chance at redemption. If Alex Smith is not re-signed he could go to any team and say "Look, new coach, new system, he wants his people and I'm not one of them." But if San Francisco keeps Alex Smith, even if it's just for one more season, and things don't out work that closes the book on Smith. At that point, he becomes too much of a risk for a team to take a chance on. There would be too much baggage and too many missed opportunities. This is the perfect time to make a perfect exit.

I really want Smith to have a fresh start. I know that his struggles in San Francisco aren't entirely his fault. He had some pretty bad offensive lines, next to zero consistency at the offensive co-coordinator position, and some talent that was either under qualified, over appreciated, and in some cases down right over matched. Throw in the injuries and you have what amounts to what we have now; a team in need of a new direction and a player that has earned his right to look for a fresh start. If the 49ers are hoping to keep Smith for a season, just because their waiting for something better it's the wrong thing to do. Everyone envolved; the fans, the players and the franchise deserve better.

Till next time. ET! Most would tell you that would be a dream come true....3-or-4 years ago. Looking forward towards next season the runningback situation is as cloudy as it's ever been in 'Ninerland.

Before we go much further, I want to come clean and say that Frank Gore IS still a fantastic player and even though he finished the season on the disabled list I'm not worried about his injury history. If you think back to not too long ago you'll remember that Gore was considered a risk around draft time because of a collegiate injury and many teams stayed away from him. If there's one thing that Gore has shown is that he can play with the pain and injuries don't seem to linger with this guy. But for how long?

When is the toll of being "the guy" for "so long" going to take its toll on Gore and when is he going to take that hit that changes things forever. What if he already has? I'm not playing Ms. Cleo and saying that Gore is going to have to 1-day be carried of the field, I'm saying 1-day Gore is not going to be the same back he is now. And if that day is sooner rather than later ? Who is left to pick up the pieces? Brian Westbrook.

I'm a huge B-West fan, I have been since he was at Villanova. But a guy with a history of concussions and a lot of wear on the tires worries me. And to make things worse, he may not even WANT to come back to San Francisco. He could look for a better situation with another team or he could take a similar roll with another team for a chance at a title. I love my 49ers but if Westbrook opens the door one day to find Bill Belichick or Mike Tomlin standing there with flowers and a box of chocolates I wouldn't blame him for bolting. (Pardon the expression Chargers fans). As long as Westbrook remains a mystery the answer to the riddle remains Anthony Dixon or the empty locker once used by Glen Coffee.

There are other concerns for the 'Niners; perhaps a corner or maybe a quarterback early. But don't be surprised if we take a runningback somewhere in the middle that's expected to contribute early.

email me anytime, footballfreepress@yahoo.com ! Please Don't.

by Eric Tellez for NFLMIX.COM

Cam Newton's off-the-field issues don't worry me that much. For the past few days I've been talking to 'Niners fans about taking Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the 7th pick of the 2011 NFL draft and they all start their arguments the same way: "Cam Newton's off-the-field issues don't worry me that much." Does that make anyone else but me uncomfortable? Does a collective fan base of people not worried about the same thing equal one large worry? I really don't know. But I do know that I don't want Cam Newton taking snaps for the 49ers next season, here's why.

The human species is made-up of three predominant brain types. There are "right brained" people that have their mood dictated by emotion, "left brained" people that have their mood dictated by logic, and "football brained" people that have their mood dictated by the NFL Draft.

Here's an example. Read the following passage:

CAM NEWTON - Quarterback - Auburn - 6', 6" - 250 pds.
An exceptionally gifted athlete that dominated the South Eastern Conference on his way to a national championship and Heisman Trophy in his 1-season as a starter.

If you are right brained you likely said something along the lines of "what a fantastic player", if you are left brained you likely said "the South Eastern Conference is the best conference by far in all of football" and if you're football brained you probably said "why did they call him an 'athlete' and not a 'quarterback?'" I consider myself a football minded person because the more I read that statement about Cam Newton the less my intuition trusts him as the man I want leading my team.

Would you be willing to turn over the keys to your offense to a player that had:
01) Has only 14Division 1 starts?
02) Played in a spread offense when your current roster was based on a power run?
03) Rarely been challenged with complex blitz packages?
04) A college offense that did not require multiple reads?
05) Taken most of his snaps from a shotgun formation?

While I believe that Cam Newton will make a good NFL quarterback I don't feel that San Francisco is the place for him to achieve any level of success. This team is just coming off a love-hate relationship with another 1st-rounder and should Newton show any signs of struggling the fans, team, and media are going to panic in a hurry. If it had not been for Alex Smith the 49ers might of been a decent fit for Newton but the patience just isn't there anymore. San Francisco needs a plug-in & play quarterback and not a project.

On the outside, Cam Newton might seem like a fairytale in the making. A handsome hero conquering his dragons and galloping in on his trusty steed to restore the golden era. On the inside, this damsel in distress has baggage and the good people of Candlestick Kingdom don't want to hear another king proclaim "just give him more time" before being beheaded.

Till next time. I closed my eyes, said a silent prayer that nothing bad had happened, and hit the green phone on the keypad. "I'm making a list for the Super Bowl, you planning on bringing anything?" I rubbed my eyes, thought a second and doing my best at 5:30 in the morning managed to force out "I'll bring some chips". "Great! I've got you down for chips, can't wait till see you Sunday." And that was that.

Just two months prior my life was total chaos and not so cut-and-clear. Like all those that took on Christmas shopping this season I was faced with unending lines, mounting credit card debt, stressful searching and even more stressful not finding. Throw in the gift exchange at work and the cold weather and all I could think of was how much I wanted the holiday season to end. I'd been told this before but for the first time in my life I realized that Santa Claus and presents had replaced Peace on Earth and Goodwill Towards Man. Judging by the faces of the others I wasn't the only one.

Spring ahead to yesterday.

Malls and shopping centers flooded with people in their Steeler and Packer gear smiling at each other when meeting an ally and uncomfortably smirking at their enemies when crossing paths with their shopping carts. "Poor guy (or girl), he's going to be in for a surprise on Sunday" they all thought. Standing in line holding my chips I heard the cell phones going off like crazy; "what time you coming over," "I'll save you seat", "you better not wear that stupid hat" and "don't forget the beer!" Different phrases that all meant "I hope to see you." Because that's what the Super Bowl has become, a celebration of a what we love with the people we love. That's what Christmas used to be about, and hopefully can someday be again.

This morning, as I put on my 49ers sweatshirt, I thought to myself that in a few months we kickoff again and the opportunity to chase the ring starts again for everyone, and maybe next year will be our year. "We could of had that guy", "Alex Smith? What were we thinking?," and "That could of been us in the Super Bowl!" were three of the favorites I heard the most and wanted to comment on today. I know I'm going stir-up a little anger here but I still believe Alex Smith was the better choice and if you give me the chance, without having me committed, I'll tell you why.

If we go back in time to the 2004 season, a season that had us going 2-14, the 49er nation was developing a deep love interest in Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart. The Heisman Trophy winner had all the looks and sounds of a franchise quarterback in control of an NFL style system in an NFL style locker room. But then something happening, Leinart decided that we wanted to return to USC to "chase history" when in reality he wasn't "chasing" as much as he was "running" away from the 49ers. Now scorned, where could the 49ers look for help? The answer, not many places.

When you look back at the 2005 draft 17 QBs total were taken with 7 still in the league 5-years later. Those remaining are:

Jason Campbell, now with the Raiders after being drafted in the first round by the Redskins with the 25th pick, one after Rodgers. But keep in mind, the Redskins also had the #9 selection and took cornerback Carlos Rogers. The Redskins passed on Aaron Rodgers.

Kyle Orton went to the Bears with the 106th selection in the 4th round. The Bears had the #4 selection in the 1st round and went with runningback Cedric Benson. The Bears also passed on Aaron Rogers.

Derek Anderson was taken by the Baltimore Ravens with the 213rd pick in the 6th round. He spent one season on the Ravens practice squad and then signed with the Cleveland Browns the following season. After 5-seasons in Cleveland Anderson went to the Arizona Cardinals. What do all THREE of these teams have in common? THEY ALL PASSED ON AARON RODGERS. Baltimore took WR Mark Clayton, Cleveland took WR Braylon Edwards, and Arizona took cornerback Antrel Rolle.

Are the pieces coming together? Aaron Rodgers, for whatever reason, was passed-up by 23 teams with at least half of those teams unsettled at quarterback at the time of the draft. So what happened?

Green Bay took Rodgers and sat him. For two seasons, while Brett Favre was running around throwing picks and pull blocking on sweeps, Rodgers watched, studied, and practiced. When the time was right he was brought into the mix with a proven offensive system, veteran receivers, and a veteran offensive coordinator. Now it's 4-years later and Rodgers, with this same system, same receivers, and same coordinator are on their way to the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers is the sum answer to what happens when you add talent with stability.

If Aaron Rodgers had to deal with the 49ers offensive system and coordinator changes, inconsistent offensive line, and mix-and-match receiver corps he would be what we now, and unfortunately forever, will remember Alex Smith as.

Till next time, email me at footballfreepress@yahoo.com to talk 49ers or football anytime. And then the news broke that his starting, and soon to be NFL franchise, quarterback Andrew Luck was returning and things only got more complicated.

And of coarse, there were the 49ers, but it really was almost a too good to be true scenario for a lifelong 'Niners fan. Harbaugh coming from Stanford to take over a struggling team in search of an identity ties in just to well with the Bill Walsh story. Throw in that Alex Smith is going to either be replaced or demoted and Harbaugh has a reputation as a quarterback creator ties in perfectly yet again. Not to discount Harbaugh's reputation as the touch as nails Captain Comeback during his playing days.

There has been some negative comments; that nobody wants the Denver job and the responsibility of the Tim Tebow project, that nobody wants to jump head first into the AFC East with the Dolphins & that after this season things can only have gotten worse at Stanford. What's wrong with any of that? I think Harbaugh evaluating his options is something that we would all of done in the position, plus do we want an impulsive head coach?

till next time,
ET

It COULD Happen....maybe

by Eric Tellez

It's just after Thanksgiving and you can safely say that at least 10 teams are out of the playoff picture. Amazingly, despite trying everything in their power, the 49ers are not one of them. But that could all change tonight with a loss at Arizona. But that's getting ahead of ourselves, let's look at the picture as it is a few hours before game time.

Our heroes are only 1 and 1/2 games out of first place in the NFL's weakest division. Best case scenario would be winning the rest of the games and finishing with 9 wins, or losing ONE game against a non-divisional team and closing the season with 8 wins. It may seem like a lot to ask for but it could happen. St Louis, Seattle, Arizona have all shown signs of being beatable and the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers are fantastic and talented but have also shown some signs of trouble. A split against the Chargers and the Packers isn't impossible, although if I were a betting man my money would be on the season being over before the 'Niners meet-up with the Chargers on December 16.

You have to remember that quarterback Troy Smith has a lot of walls to climb on his way to the top. He's small, doesn't have a total grasp of the offense, doesn't have a great deal of arm strength and is one of many former Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks to be considered the product of a system and not outright ability. Let's face it, he isn't staring down the Youngstown State defense anymore. Even the die-hard fans have to admit that a team needing a winning streak is a not an ideal place for on the job training.

The only thing that we may have going for us at this point is that the Arizona Cardinals may be worse than we are! Their quarterback situation is just as bad, if not worse, than ours. The pass defense has holes bigger than ours and their running game seems to go flat for long stretches of time. It could be that the Arizona Cardinals may save our season by being worse and allowing time for us to GET BETTER (?)!

Sounds like a lot to ask. But it could happen. My expectations are that the Cardinals will lose and not because the 49ers are terrific, just better. But you have to watch out for expectations, everyone knows they can be a killer in this league.

Till Next Time
Et

Winning Solves Everything

by Eric Tellez

The world of sports is full of cliches and clever little phrases that can be inserted to stifle even the best of sports journalists. "We have to take it one game at a time" and "I have to give a lot of credit to my offensive line" are two of my personal favorites. But the phrase "Winning Solves Everything" has a lot of meaning in 49ersland these days with the team going against a tricky Philadelphia Eagles team.

The Eagles have lost a starting quarterback and replaced him with...their starting quarterback? Sure Kevin Kolb is not as versatile a guy as Michael Vick but at one point not too long ago he was the franchise and the future. The Philadelphia Eagles are also struggling running the ball which helps but considering that the Eagles are primarily a pass first offense how much effort do you really need from your backs? Macklin, Jackson, Celek could cause chaos if allowed to run wild. Or not, there have been times when the Philly Big-3 have gone silent for extended periods of time. Philadelphia has a lot of questions going into this Sunday's game, the only team with more is, sadly, San Francisco.

The 'Niners have had tough loses to New Orleans and Atlanta and blow-out loses to Kansas City and Seattle. Take a step back and you have a loss to the defending champ and 3-teams that can win their divisions. No, I don't think Seattle is THAT good - I just think everyone else is THAT bad. Arizona is down and starting a rookie quarterback and St. Louis is playing well but probably can't maintain it over the coarse of the season. San Francisco can still win the division and still has one more shot at the Seahawks at home, but for any of it to matter we have to win NOW!!!

The coach is on a hot seat -WIN and he's off if it. The quarterback is considering a bust - WIN and he's back in favor. The team can't finish the job - WIN and that's put to rest also. This team was expected to be run away winners of the division and go deep into the playoffs, now it's the first team of the season to be faced with a MUST WIN game. Win and there's hope - lose and it might be time to blow-up the whole thing and start with a new foundation.

One team is going to walk away with a lot of answers to some very important questions after Sunday's game. But if the Niners lose there's going to have to be some big changes and there's no question about that.

Niner Fans - DROP THAT BUTTON!

Eric Tellez on Sept 13, 2010

There comes a time when every fan has to do some serious soul searching. A time when you have to come to grips with maybe, just maybe, you let your emotions get the better of you and you allowed your psyche to make the biggest of sins; forgetting that sports are played on the field and not on paper. Some of these moments come to mind immediately; fumbling away the 3-peat in 1990, Brett Favre ripping our hearts out last season in the Metrodome. Despite the let down, yesterday's 31-6 loss to Seattle was NOT one of those moments.

Perspective

Looking around the rest of the league you have interesting openers in all conferences. The Indianapolis Colts losing in Houston, the Washington Redskins shutting down the Dallas Cowboys, and to a lesser extent Atlanta dropping to Pittsburgh in overtime. Just for fun, I'm even going out on a limb and predict that the New York Jets are going to start off with a great big "L" tonight against Baltimore.

What Does It All mean?

It means that of all the teams that took the field this weekend half of them lost. That's it. It is not an indication of things to come. The Indianapolis Colts are still a powerhouse, Atlanta is still a division contender, Pittsburgh is still in disarray, and the Cowboys are still the most talented team in the NFC East. San Francisco can win this division, San Francisco should win this division, but there's just that little insecure fan in all of us that won't let us say out loud "San Francisco WILL win this division."

Fearless Forecast

Next week's game against the New Orleans Saints is going to be huge. Even though the Saints are defending Super Bowl Champions I didn't see anything that resembled last year's team in their Week 1 win against the Minnesota Vikings. I'm not going to predict a win against the Saints, that insecure fan shows it ugly head again, but I'm going to expect a much improved team over what we witnessed yesterday.

Even if San Francisco loses to the Saints next week, it is not out of the question to go into our by week with a 4-4 record followed by 3 very winnable games against St. Louis, Tampa Bay, & Arizona. That would put us at 7-wins with 5 opportunities to get the last 2 wins that would likely win the division.

Hide That Panic Button
This is a good team and the season has just begin. Calmly drop the panic button and move away slowly, this is no time for the insecure little fan to do anything drastic.

Brian Westbrook - An Amazing Addition

by Eric Tellez on 16 Aug 2010

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that they have signed former Philadelphia Eagles' runningback Brian Westbrook to a 1-year deal worth a guaranteed $1.25 million. The front runners for "BWest's" services had been the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Rams before the sudden retirement of HB Glen Coffee sent the 'Niners scrambling for a competent back-up for Frank Gore. I have been a big fan of Brian Westbrook for years, so many years that I have to wonder just how much tread is left on the tires.

Since 2002 Westbrook has been a multipurpose weapon that would of been a perfect fit for the 49ers West Coast Offense of old with his ability to catch the ball and turn the corner on stretch plays. Now, after 8-years of being abused in the NFC East Westbrook has found a perfect situation to begin winding down his career as a 3rd down back on an up-and-coming team.
But is Westbrook ready to be a part time player?

At the age of 30 Westbrook is still a big time weapon. If not for a series of concussions last season it is not hard to imagine that he could still be the featured back in Philadelphia. And that's were the questions start for me. What's going to happen if he isn't getting the ball enough? What's going to happen if Frank Gore goes down with an injury and we're one hit to the head away from our #3 runningback? Is Westbrook going to politic returning punts and kicks? If he does what's going to happen to Ted Ginn's psyche?

If this were 3-or-4 seasons ago I would be singing the praises of this signing to anyone that would listen. Now, I have too many concerns that can be only be answered by sitting, watching, and waiting for BWest to get the ball in his hands and see what he does with it. The possibility is there for Westbrook to add a new dimension to the offense and I hope that the Westbrook that takes the field is the same one that I've grown accustomed to watching to every Sunday.

Something is telling me that bringing Brian Westbrook into the mix is going to be amazing. I just don't know if it's going to be an amazing success, or an amazing failure.

email me at cover3sports@yahoo.com to talk football, 49ers, and sports in general! Everywhere you turn the words "49ers" and "playoffs" are being used in the same sentence for the first time since the Buccs and Raiders were NFL powerhouses. All the playoff excitement got me thinking, then reading, and finally counting 49er playoff history. Here's some random numbers that I hope you may find interesting.

49ers in WildCard games have 3 wins, 2 loses.
49ers in Divisional playoff games have 13 wins, 7 loses.
49ers in NFC Championship games have 5 wins, 9 loses.
49ers in Super Bowls have 5 wins, 0 loses.

49ers post season records vs. opponents

vs Giants 4 wins, 3 loses
vs Bears 3 wins, o loses
vs Redskins 3 wins, 1 lose
vs Bengals 2 wins, o loses
vs Cowboys 2 wins, 5 loses
vs Broncos 1 win, o loses
vs Chargers 1 win, o loses
vs Dolphins 1 win, o loses
vs Eagles 1 win, o loses
vs Rams 1 win, o loses
vs Yankees 1 win, o loses
vs Lions 1 win, 1 lose
vs Packers 1 win, 3 loses
vs Buccaneers o wins, 1 lose
vs Falcons o wins, 1 lose
vs Browns o wins, 1 lose

Quarterback Records As Playoff Starters

Joe Montana has 14 wins, 5 loses
Steve Young has 8 wins, 6 loses
John Brodie has 2 wins, 3 loses
Jeff Garcia has 1 win, 2 loses
Frankie Albert has 1 win, 1 lose
Y.A. Tittle has o wins, and 1 lose

Like all sports, the past very seldom has any bearing on the future but after looking over these numbers I feel a little bit better about a potential match-up with Minnesota and not so comfortable with a game that places us in the path of Green Bay. Be back in a couple days to pick-up where I left off with 49er player profiles. It's great to be back! Drafted 1 round (#9 overall) in 2007 amateur draft.

Let's start out by stating the obvious; getting Ted Ginn, Jr. from the Miami Dolphins for a 5th round selection is a steal. There's going to be some people out there that will tell you that he drops the ball too much (he's does) and that he hasn't played well enough to have earned a top 10 draft selection (he hasn't) but when you consider that all we lost in return is a low round draft pick you have to feel like we pulled a fast one on the Dolphins.

Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, and Ted Ginn give the 49ers three young, highly talented playmakers at wide receiver and with Arnaz Battle leaving for Pittsburgh the addition of Ginn not only cancels out Battle's contribution it also gives the 'Niners an outstanding punt and kick returner. Ted Ginn is explosive in the open field and a big play on special teams is often the difference between a win and lose in today's NFL.

The critics will tell you that Ginn has averaged only 43-catches a season since he came into the league. I'll be the first to concede that kind of production is not what you want from the investment you make in a top 10 pick but in the right situation 43-catches may be perfect. Doing the figures in my head 43-catches a season comes out tooooooo 2 catches a game. Let's say you have Crabtree double teamed with a safety, Vernon Davis keeping the linebackers honest, and Morgan working hard against his coverage. Perfect time to go over the top to the young, speed demon that's matched-up against the enemies 4th best defensive back. Just thinking about the possibilities has to get you excited.

If I'm describing Josh Morgan in one word I come-up with "potential". Crabtree would have to be "star". Ginn is already striking me as "playmaker".

Back soon, email me your thoughts on the 49ers or anything football related. Some of these players, Alex Smith & Michael Crabtree for instance, are well known throughout the league so I'll be saving those players for the end. As always, you can always email your thoughts at cmnpsportsnet@gmail.com. Et

WHO IS...Josh Morgan

Jersey #: 84

School: Virginia Tech

Position: Wide Receiver

Experience: 3rd year, drafted in the 6th round (174 overall) in 2008.

In an odd bit of deja vu, Josh Morgan brings to mind a lot of memories of WR Mike Sherrard. Sherrard came to the 49ers after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys due to numerous knee injuries and was always on the verge of amazing. The 'Niners receiving corps during the late 80's and early 90's was Jerry Rice on one side, John Taylor on the other, and a promise that one day Sherrard was going to be healthy and West Coast offense was going to go to new and incredible new places.

Flash forward to 2008 and the drafting of Josh Morgan out of Virginia Tech. Morgan immediately made a huge impression in his rookie training camp and even had some people saying first year starter. But then he got sick, lost weight, and just when he seemed to be getting comfortable again, tore his groin. His final numbers; 20 catches, 3 touchdowns, 16-yard average.

In 2009, Morgan was a starter coming out of training camp and was expected to stretch the field while veteran WR Isaac Bruce and TE Vernon Davis did the dirty work-up the middle. The addition of WR Michael Crabtree was supposed to give the team TWO young, explosive playmakers but it never developed. Crabtree showed signs of greatness, Davis elevated his play, and Morgan sort of faded not being able to replace Bruce on the field.

Now 2010 is coming upon us and the time is here for Morgan to reach his potential starting opposite Crabtree. The talent is there, the size doesn't go away, and the speed is building on the inside ready to unleash on the rest of the league. All you'd have to do is think back to the team's experiment with Morgan at kick returner to know that this man is dangerous with the ball in his hands. But deep down inside I'm always leery that something else is going to creep-up and take Morgan down again.

They called Sherrard "Jessie James" because they said that he "stole money" by always being on the team but never being on the field. This year we find out if Josh Morgan is this generation's outlaw or the final piece to our playoff puzzle.

GM is Out; Mystery is In

by Eric Tellez *March 19, 2010*

The 49ers have announced that GM Scott McCloughan has left the team for personal reasons and will have his day-to-day responsibilities passed onto Pro Personnel Director Tom Gamble and Director of Player Personnel Trent Baalke. McCloughan's agent has been making statements to the media that McCloughan has not been released from the team while McCloughan's quotes seem to speak of his time in San Francisco in the past tense. And to have this happen just a few weeks before the draft raises even more suspicions.

Playing Catch-up

Scott McCloughan has been a lighting rod for fan criticism since he joined the team in 2005. He was the GM that oversaw the longest rookie holdout in 22-years when he couldn't sign WR Michael Crabtree, has been an outspoken supporter of QB Alex Smith, and made CB Nate Clements the HIGHEST PAID defensive player in history. If you want to get rid of the guy the reasons were there, but the 49ers haven't officially done that regardless of what anyone, including McCoughan himself, seems to think.

Downward Spiral

I was home watching NFL network when the report came-out on the bottom line. I immediately logged onto Google to find out that McCloughan was being given less responsibility and his jobs were being delegated to other members of the staff because of "personal reasons". I went to bed and woke-up to find that he had vacated the building. That's a pretty rapid turn of events, going from less jobs to NO job in the span of 24-hours tells you that things either went downhill quickly or had been in the works for a while. But if the wheels were already in motion why not keep them turning till after the draft and pretend that the GM is busy doing other things? Something just isn't right.

Just A Game

Regardless of the reason we hope that Scott McCloughan and his family are in good health and that his "personal reasons" are kept private. 'Niner fans, it's time to circle the wagons and give our full support to Tom Gamble and Trent Baalke until we get McCloughan back or get a new GM. But for the sake of everyone involved, I hope whatever happens goes down sooner, rather than, later.

*Email me at cmnpsportsnet@gmail.com to talk football, 49ers, and sports anytime* Et

'Niners Actions Are Doing The Talking

by Eric Tellez
3/4/2010

Now is not the time to panic. In a world where free agency has gone mad the 49ers remain one of the lone bastions of sanity. Let the other teams throw their money around and get into high dollar contracts with players that may never show-up to work after signing, the 49ers have mastered the chaos.

From a division stand-point the Seattle Seahawks & St. Louis Rams are further behind in their rebuilding efforts and the Arizona Cardinals are on the decline. There is no need to play Eddie DeBartolo-Warbucks when the 49ers can win the division with what they have now and continue to rebuild through the draft. Sure, they could use some help on the offensive line and some depth at safety would be fantastic. But even though there are concerns, they are concerns that don't have to dealt with immediately.

If you want to win in the NFL you have to stop the run and Franchise tagging NT Aubrayo Franklin is a huge step in the right direction. The 49ers gave Franklin a 1-yr $7-million deal that allows them to negotiate a bigger contract during the season. It gives the 49ers one more year to evaulate Franklin and shows Franklin that the team IS willing to spend money if it's worth the return.

The 49ers have also kept linebackers Matt Wilhelm and Ahmad Brooks which should help a lot next year. Brooks, who hasn't signed but isn't going to be allowed to leave, is a talented up-and-comer and even though Wilhelm isn't a stat monster he is the kind of player that great teams build on. He reminds a lot of Mike Walter.

The line is going to benefit from the re-signing of David Baas as well. If we could draft him some help it'd be even better!

Let the Redskins spend $10 million for a long snapper and make the headlines. We'll be busy working on our foundation.

*contact me at cmnsportsnet@gmail.com to talk football or 49ers anytime!* Et

Roger Craig - A Fan's Dilemma

by Eric Tellez at cmnpsportsnet@gmail.com

I'd like to start by declaring that Roger Craig was my favorite player growing-up. When you're young you hate to lose more than anything else and Roger Craig never lost. Three Super Bowl wins in 3 tries, 10 playoff appearances in 11 seasons, division title-after-division title. Even when he left the 49ers and went to the Raiders after negotiations fell threw he still seemed to be the one that came out on top.

So why was I not surprised when the Hall of Fame passed him over?

The numbers are there, he was first player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season, should of been a Super Bowl MVP, and was probably the reason why Marshall Faulk became Marshall Faulk and was not drafted as a defensive back. Pro Bowls, MVP, even led the league in receptions in 1985!

Jerry Rice is in, Joe Montana is in, Bill Walsh is in, Roger Craig is out. Oddly enough it makes sense in a way. Craig only had three 1,000 yard seasons and had some pretty mild years in the touchdown department. There was that fumble in the 1990 NFC Championship that ended the 3-peat. (Realistically, the Bills could of caused a lot of problems for the 49ers with Steve Young still being the run first quarterback he was in those days.) Was Roger Craig a good player on a great team that could of used any runningback to catch 3-yard passes? Ricky Watters thrived in the offense a couple of years later after the Dexter Carter project.

The best criteria for the Hall of Fame is this; if you were going to write a history of the league as a novel, could you exclude this player and still have a book? You'd have to have Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and Bill Walsh. Roger Craig doesn't have to be in the book for it to make sense. But would any of them of had the success they did if Roger Craig was not as good at his job as he was?

It's a fan's dilemma that I hope will be solved when Craig gets into the Hall of Fame. But I don't see it happening and for some reason, even though it doesn't make sense, I'm not angry.

*thanks for staying with me after the pneumonia and wisdom teeth thing! Smith had 6 sacks, 90 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries for the 'Niners this season.

Smith has been with the 49ers since 2008 when he signed a 6-year contract after playing with the Cincinnati Bengals since 2001. Last season, Smith contributed 7 sacks, 73 tackles, and one interception. He has also started every game since 2002.

OK, those are the numbers. But here's what has me excited about the selection.

It's a well-known fact that when the awards and accolades are given it is the teams that are winning that get the lions share. There will always be players that go unnoticed and unrewarded because their team doesn't attract the same attention. I was afraid that Justin Smith was going to be one of those guys.

Ever since Smith arrived in San Francisco he has been a dominate anchor on the defensive line making the key tackle, tying-up multiple blockers, and tracking down running plays from behind. The television commentator says "Justin Smith on the tackle" and then continues to praise Patrick Willis or compare the play to something Dana Stubblefield would have done in the past. Meanwhile, where's Justin Smith? Knocking down a pass and forcing a punt on 3rd-and-long.

Having Justin Smith named to the Pro Bowl is showing that the league is paying attention even if you couldn't tell by reading the news releases. I don't even know if a Justin Smith football card even exists at the moment! (Note to TOPPS, I expect 2 next year; 1 regular, 1 All-Star.)

Having 5 'Niners in the Pro Bowl is outstanding for an 8 win team. But look at the names; Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Justin Smith, Andy Lee. All young players, all the future of this team. The 49er's are getting respect nationally and it's only going to get better.

***Sorry for the delay, had to sit-out a week after surgery. I'll be back with regular updates as I get back to normal. The selection is Gore's second, his first since 2006, and continues a proud legacy of Pro Bowl players coming out of the 49ers backfield.

The first 49ers ball carrier selected to an All-Star game was fullback Joe Perry in 1949 during the days of the old All-America Football Conference. Perry is often considered the best back in team history and attended All-Star games in 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1958.

The first halfback to make the team, as well as the back with the most All-Star selections, is Hugh McElhenny who went to a total of 6 games. His first game was in 1952 and he was selected again in 1953, 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958. When mentioning the great backs in team history McElhenny is never far from the top of the list despite never leading the league in rushing or scoring more than 9 touchdowns in a season.

Fullback Ken Willard, who is probably the most overlooked back in team history, made the Pro Bowl in 1965, 1966, 1968, and 1969. He started the 1965 and 1968 games. Do you remember who was the next 49ers fullback selected to a Pro Bowl?

Roger Craig was selected as a fullback for his first Pro Bowl in 1985. He would be named to NFC rosters in 1987, 1988 and 1989 as a halfback. Ricky Watters was also selected to 3 consecutive Pro Bowls from 1992-1994.

Garrison Hearst made the team in 1998 and 2001 while Charlie Garner earned a selection in-between being named to the 2000 NFC roster.

Here's a trivia question for you. Who was the first 49ers fullback to make the Pro Bowl after Roger Craig in 1985? Not Tom Rathman. Not William Floyd. It was Fred Beasley who started the 2003 game.

That's it for now, I'll be back on Saturday to go over next year's schedule. Email me at nflpressbox@gmail.com to talk 49ers or football in general. Gore Pro Bowl Bound

by Eric Tellez ***1/21/2010*** nflpressbox@gmail.com

San Francisco runningback Frank Gore is headed to Miami to play in the Pro Bowl on January 31st.

Gore was selected as an "alternate" when the names where released in early January and will be replacing St. Louis Rams runningback Steven Jackson. Jackson can not play in the game due to injury. Gore rushed for 1,120 yards, scored 10 touchdowns and was the featured player in the 49ers offense this season.

Gore was selected to the 2006 Pro Bowl and joins teammates Vernon Davis, Andy Lee and Patrick Willis on this year's NFC team.

Please see tomorrow's article for more information. This term is known as "free agency" and their are two categories that players fall into:

RESTRICTED: A player with 3-years experience is allowed to test the market and make a deal with another team. The player's original team can match the dollar amount and keep the player or choose not to match the offer and lose the player. There is a catch however, the team that signs the player has to give the first team a compensatory draft pick of original equal value. Example; player X is drafted by the 49ers in the 3rd round, the player signs a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders, the Raiders have to give the 49ers their 3rd round pick in this year's draft. All restricted free agents HAVE TO BE SIGNED no later than 7 days before the draft.

UNRESTRICTED: A player can sign with any team of his choice for any amount of money as long as it is at-or-above the league minimum for that position and experience.

The 49ers have 2 Restricted free agents and 1o unrestricted free agents.

RESTRICTED
OG David Baas - Can play center, left guard, right guard, and make an impact on special teams. This will be the one player that the 49ers will try to keep.

LB Ahmad Brooks - A raw talent, Brooks has been cut-and-resigned by the team numerous times in the last couple of seasons. But when given the opportunity to take the field as a pass-rushing linebacker he came on strong. Could be a steal if the 49ers can continue to develop him.

UNRESTRICTED
WR Arnaz Battle - Great supporting player but on wrong side of 30-years old. I would love to see Battle back with the 49ers but don't think he'll return.

CB Dre Bly - A great cornerback, would be fantastic opposite CB Nate Clements but asking price may be too high for 49ers.

CB Walt Harris - Finished the season on the injured reserve. At 36-years old Harris may be too much a risk to pay the kind of salary he'd deserve for his years of service.

FS Marcus Hodson - Has struggled at times but Safety Michael Lewis has been concussion prone lately and is looking older. I believe that the 'Niners will hold onto Hodson and groom him to fill in for Lewis.

DT Aubrayo Franklin - One of the main reasons why the 49ers were among the best in stopping the run. Doesn't get a lot of credit or big numbers but Franklin is going to be a big signing for someone on the way up.

OT Tony Pashos - Suffered a season ending shoulder injury one month after joining the team. I'd like to see him return at 100% and earn a shot on next year's team.

S Mark Roman - Roman was unhappy most of 2009 and asked the 49ers to trade him. Will likely not return.

OT Barry Sims - The 49ers like Sims because he can play guard and tackle and has been one of the lineman that has shown an ability to adapt to the different offenses.

LB Jeff Ulbrich - Will have to retire due to concussions. Ulbrich was a career 49er playing with
team since he was drafted in 2000.

LB Matt Wilhelm - Was signed last season when LB Jeff Ulbrich was placed on injured reserve. Great leader and a smart player, I hope the 49ers can keep him.

AFC PLAYOFFS: The Good, Bad & Ugly

By Eric Tellez ***1/14/10*** sfreport15@gmail.com

Here's the second part to the playoff review I started earlier today. I didn't want to post until I knew for sure what the status was for Indy receiver Pierre Garcon who's family resides in Haiti.

GAME 1: Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts
The Good: The Colts could be the best team in the playoffs and have the best quarterback in the NFL. What separates the Colts from other teams is that they know what they do well and stay with it. Baltimore isn't going to take the Colts "out of their system" no matter how hard they hit or how long they hold the ball.

The Bad: We've been here before, the Colts entering the playoffs looking unbeatable and playing a team high on talent and short on respect. The Colts have been weak against the run as long as I can remember and Ray Rice and Willis McGahee are hard runners that won't wear down. WRs Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie are good, but how will they perform in their first post season?

The Ugly: Baltimore put a huge beating on the Patriots, even WITH WR Wes Welker the Ravens would have been a superior team. The Ravens have been playing for keeps the last few weeks, the Colts are entering the playoffs cold.

Baltimore Ravens
The Good: Joseph Addai is a solid runner but a defense with Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed can stop the run. The Colts can win games running the ball occasionally but what happens when the run is no longer a threat and Indy is passing because they have no choice?

The Bad: The Ravens are starting a back-up at cornerback, Chris Carr, and Manning will find him when he's making his pre-snap adjustments. If the Colts get ahead early can QB Joe Flacco score points in a hurry with this offense?

The Ugly: The Ravens are entering the game weakened in their secondary. The Colts have enough wide receivers to stock three teams. To make it worse, the game winner could be kicked by former Raven Matt Stover who had been with the Ravens since their days in Cleveland.
************************************************************************************
GAME 2: New York Jets at San Diego Chargers
New York Jets
The Good: The Jets win games by working the clock and running the ball. As long as rookie QB Mark Sanchez, who only threw 15 passes against Cincinnati, doesn't lose the game the Jets can win. The Chargers are weak on their defensive line without Jamal Williams.

The Bad: The Chargers can score in a hurry. If the Jets are taking 7-and-8 minutes off the clock and the Chargers are scoring in 2-and-3 minutes than the ball control offense will backfire against New York. If the Chargers are ahead in the 4th they can alternate handoffs to RBs LaDainian Tomlinson, Jacob Hester, and Darren Sproles.

The Ugly: The Chargers have a fantastic secondary. If the game comes down to Mark Sanchez throwing the season is over for the J-E-T-S.

San Diego Chargers
The Good: Cornerback Darelle Revis is great, but not great enough to cover more than one man. The Chargers have weapons at every ball handling position and QB Philip Rivers is not intimidated by the moment. The Jets can run the ball but the Chargers have speed at linebacker and Safety Eric Weddle can play in the box.

The Bad: LaDainian Tomlinson has shown his age this season more than ever before and the Bolts have struggled in the Red Zone as of late. QB Philip Rivers has been great but hasn't dealt with much pressure. If the Jets can penetrate on blitzes and force Rivers to move he'll complete passes all day...they'll just be for 2-and-3 yards.

The Ugly: The Jets will love running against the 3-4 defense, especially with NT Jamal Williams on the sidelines in street clothes. Reserve players Dwight Lowery and Brad Smith have raw talent and aren't the kind of players you can figure out with film study.

NFC Playoffs - The Good, Bad & Ugly

by Eric Tellez /Jan 14, 2010 / sfreport15@gmail.com

I try to keep things strictly 49er related when I write but with everyone talking playoffs it has gotten me in the spirit to do a little playoff analysis of my own. I'm not going to give predictions, based on what we've seen lately who would, but here's some thoughts that are on my mind.

Game 1: Dallas at Minnesota

DALLAS COWBOYS
The Good: The Cowboys are the hottest team in the NFL after winning their last four and beating Philly in consecutive weeks. The team is healthy, WR Roy Williams is catching the ball, and the pass rush might be as good as it was in the Jimmy Johnson days. To top it all off, I can't recall any game in Brett Favre's career when he amazed against The 'Boys.

The Bad: 3 of their last 4 wins were against Washington and Philadelphia. I'm not talking about the Philly that beat the Niners 27-13, I'm referring to the Eagles that lost to Oakland in week 6. If you find out that Eagle QB Donovan McNabb had off-season surgery you heard it here first. He did not look healthy or comfortable the last two weeks. The win against New Orleans was big, but they almost gave that one away.

The Ugly: The secondary is playing amazingly well for being such a young group. This game is going to come down to Brett Favre throwing the ball and if Mike Jenkins and Ken Hamlin aren't ready they're going to have a long day.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS
The Good: The Vikings can stop the run, the Vikings are at home, Dallas hasn't faced a pass rusher the caliber on DE Jared Allen in a long time. If Dallas wants to defend the pass they can see a steady dose of RB Adrian Peterson. Dallas doesn't have a linebacker that can cover TE Shiancoe and if they use a safety someone is open upfield.

The Bad: The Vikings have looked like a team about to implode at times with some serious concern coming from Vikingland over who is running the team; the coach or the quarterback? Before beating the New York Giants, a team with nothing to play for, the Vikings had lost to Carolina and Chicago. This is a solid group of players that have somehow managed to form an unsteady team.

The Ugly: Brett Favre. If you want to make a case that Brett Favre is the greatest quarterback in history I wouldn't argue against you. But if you had one game to decide the fate of the human race where does Brett Favre rank for you?
*************************************************************************************
Game 2: Arizona at New Orleans
ARIZONA CARDINALS
The Good: There is no better team in "one game seasons" than the Cardinals. This team can win the shootouts and WRs Steve Breaston and Early Doucet are emerging as capable compliments to WR Larry Fitzgerald. The team runs just enough to keep you honest.

The Bad: The defense looked bad against Green Bay. Safety Adrian Wilson seems more interested in ripping at the ball than making tackles and nickelback Michael Adams got picked on repeatedly all game. I don't know why they picked on Adams, they must have gotten tired of picking on CB Bryant McFadden is all I can figure.

The Ugly: Cardinals had it easy all season with 2-wins against Seattle, 2-wins against St. Louis, and wins against Chicago and Detroit. The #2 team in the division, San Francisco, beat them twice. How will Cards do against quality opponents in back-to-back weeks?

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
The Good: The Saints had three wins against playoff teams while winning 13 in a row. The Cardinals had trouble covering the Packers on passing plays and the Saints can spread the ball around better than any team in the league. This defense can create turnovers and pressure the quarterback.

The Bad: The loss against Dallas did more than end the perfect season. Since the Dallas game New Orleans has lost their last two to the Bucs and Carolina. The Saints haven't shown much of an ability to blitz the quarterback dropping their linebackers into coverage. If there is a weakness in their secondary Arizona will exploit that faster than you can say "former arena league quarterback".

The Ugly: It's hard to be excited for a team that lost its last three before going into the playoffs. The Saints can score a lot of points but what are they like against a team that can match them score-for-score. The game may depend of RB Reggie Bush, LB Jonathan Vilma, or Safety Darren Sharper making a play in the end.

Thats's it for now! I'll be back Monday on the 49ers beat going over Free Agents and weekend signings. I know it's a bit of a layoff but I'm trying to get the most up-to-date 49er info for all my readers.
